March 24, 2007 - So, I turned 40 a couple days ago ... nope, don't feel any older, wiser or richer ... but I'm happy and healthy, which counts for more than any of the other stuff. My friends at work helped me celebrate my birthday in fine fashion! They decorated my cubical by running streamers across the top, so many that I called it my "birthday cave". The streamers held up 25-30 black and purple balloons. The exterior of my cubical held a variety of "falling body parts" and "caution, old people crossing" type signs and posters. My desk was covered with the expected "40th birthday over the hill" gag gifts and glitter, as well a much less expected assortment of candles, candle holders and angels. I was overwhelmed at this point, but the fun had just begun. Kristy, my manager, presented me with my crown and sash ... I've always wanted a crown and sash set ... all that was missing was the scepter, but Kristy had decided that it would be better that I not have anything that could be used as a weapon!! The crown is silver with a big purple 40 in the middle and the sash said "Celebrating 40" ... I had to take the sash off about half way through the day, but I wore the crown for most of the day. Jennifer had contacted my sister, who worked with my mom, to assemble a group of pictures of some of my finer moments, which where then narrowed down, scanned and passed around so everyone in the office could write their birthday wishes, thoughts ect. I'm not sure when the tradition of the Birthday Book started, but I'm glad it did because it will be great fun to go back to that in a couple years (or when I'm having a tough day) and remember how much fun my 40th birthday celebration was. Black floral arrangements are a traditional part of the 40th birthday celebrations in our office, but I am normally the one who puts together the arrangements. Heather had made a beautiful bridal bouquet for the wedding send off they gave me at the office, she also created my special birthday arrangement. She said that didn't like any of the black silk flowers she found so decided to spray paint a bunch of white and red flowers black and added some purple hydrangea and wisteria stems to the arrangement - I love the purple/black combo. Kim, Kristy, Deb H & Deb B each presented me with additional angels as well. Kim thought it would be a nice touch to have our former office manager, Mike, write a poem for the occasion. Mike has known me since before the Sioux Falls office opened, so he had a lot of material to work with. He and Marilyn arrived at the office just as I had finished serving the Ice Cream cake from Dairy Queen (Queen, crowns ... see a pattern here?) Anyway, I love seeing them and didn't question, for a moment, why they were in the office ... I honestly thought it was just a coincidence. I had seen our current office manager, Brad, walk though with some red envelopes so when Jennifer started having everyone roll their phone and gather at the printers (which are right next to my cube) I assumed that the managers were going to present some "On The Spot" awards (that's what the red envelopes are for). Imagine the shocked look on my face when Mike pulled both of the chairs out of my cubical and asked me to sit down because he had something to say. I must have turned about 7 shades of red as he started to read the poem, which included his recollection of the day he met me... it was wonderful. All I can say is that I work with an awesome group of people! Love & hugs y'all, |
